🌿 Our latest adventure with Miss Jenn? Tracking a coyote!
🧐 Shape recognition: Noticing that coyote tracks are oval-shaped, while domestic dog prints are more circular.
📏 Measuring & comparing: Placing our hands next to the tracks to estimate the size difference.
➗ Math in the wild: Counting the number of prints, measuring distances between them, and making predictions about the coyote’s movement.

Meet Abbey, our dedicated pedagogista at The Native School! 🌿✨ Abbey grew up exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where she was homeschooled alongside her siblings from Pre-K through 12th grade. She later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and has since taught in various educational settings, from public schools to art education and curriculum development.

Through her journey, Abbey discovered her passion for play-based learning and nature as an essential part of education. Now, she supports our teachers and families by creating engaging learning environments and guiding educators in effective, child-led teaching methods. 💚

🌸 Counting & Categorizing – How many flowers can you find? What colors, shapes, and sizes do you notice?
🔤 Spelling & Language – Can you name the flowers? Let’s practice spelling words like ‘daisy’ and ‘lavender.’
📏 Measuring & Math – Using rulers, sticks, or even our hands, we measure petals and stems to compare sizes.
🎨 Observation & Creativity – Sketching, journaling, or storytelling inspired by the flowers around us.

This child-led, hands-on approach—inspired by Orton Gillingham, the Reggio Emilia philosophy, and the Scandinavian forest school model—makes learning feel effortless, engaging, and full of wonder.
