Educational Oversight

at The Native School

Instructional Specialist

The Instructional Specialist at The Native School plays a key role in supporting the depth, consistency, and intentionality of learning across all programs.

This role works closely with teachers to guide curriculum development, strengthen documentation and assessment practices, and help translate children’s interests into meaningful, skill-building learning experiences.

In addition, the Instructional Specialist partners with families by providing resources, insight, and support as children grow and move through different stages of their educational journey.

This role is essential in bridging child-led, nature-based exploration with the development of foundational skills in literacy, communication, problem-solving, and social-emotional growth.

By observing patterns in student learning and supporting educators in real time, the Instructional Specialist helps ensure that each child is both supported and appropriately challenged within a cohesive, research-informed framework.

At its core, this work ensures that every child is seen, valued, and guided in ways that honor their individuality while fostering confidence, capability, and a lifelong love of learning.

While many nature-based programs focus primarily on outdoor exploration, few include a dedicated Instructional Specialist to support the depth and continuity of learning.

This role is part of what allows The Native School to move beyond enrichment and into truly intentional education. By bridging real-time classroom experiences with thoughtful curriculum design, documentation, and skill development, the Instructional Specialist ensures that children’s play, inquiry, and exploration are meaningfully connected to their growth over time.

This added layer of support allows teachers to remain fully present with children while still maintaining a high level of academic and developmental awareness. It also provides families with greater clarity and confidence in their child’s learning journey—ensuring that what happens outdoors each day is not only engaging, but purposeful, responsive, and deeply impactful.
